Computation of Flow, Turbulence and Bed Evolution with Sand Waves

چکیده
A vertical two-dimensional morphodynamic model with non-hydrostatic, free surface flow is reported herein. This numerical model can simulate flow and turbulence characteristics over sand waves. Likewise, model can reproduce the sand wave formation and migration process as well as free surface oscillation simultaneously in a moving boundary domain with the implication of a generalized coordinate system. A nonlinear k-ε model is employed as a turbulence closure. CIP numerical technique is used to resolve advection term of momentum equations. An Eulerian stochastic formulation of sediment exchange process in terms of pick up and deposition function is incorporated to simulate non-equilibrium sediment transport that explicitly considers the flow variability during morphodynamic computation. The numerical model is validated with experimental data on flow and turbulence over fixed dunes as well as laboratory measurement and visualization of dune geometry and migration.

Variation of Streamwise and Vertical Turbulence Intensity in a Smooth and Rough Bed Open Channel Flow
An experimental study with four different types of bed conditions was carried out to understand the effect of roughness in open channel flow at two different Reynolds numbers. The bed conditions include a smooth surface and three different roughness conditions, which were generated using sand grains with a median diameter of 2.46 mm. The three rough conditions include a surface with distributed...
متن کاملExperimental analysis of shock waves turbulence in contractions with rectangular sections
Formation of shock waves has an important role in supercritical flows studies. These waves are often occurring during passage of supercritical flow in the non-prismatic channels. In the present study, the effect of length of contraction wall of open-channel for two different geometries (1.5 m and 0.5 m) and fixed contraction ratio was investigated on hydraulic parameters of shock waves using ex...
متن کاملModelling offshore sand wave evolution
We present a two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological numerical model describing the behaviour of offshore sand waves. The model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load formula. The water movement is coupled to the sediment transport equation by a seabed evolution equation. Using this model, we investigate the evolution of sand wav...
متن کاملSimulating offshore sand waves
Sand waves form a prominent regular pattern in the offshore seabeds of sandy shallow seas and pose a threat to a range of offshore activities. A two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological simulation model describing the behaviour of these sand waves has been developed. The simulation model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load form...
متن کاملMixture Theory Model of Vortex Sand Ripple Dynamics
Introduction: Our lack of understanding of the evolution of seabed roughness (e.g., sand ripples) in sandy coastal regions inhibits our ability to accurately forecast waves and currents and ultimately large-scale morphodynamics. Most wave and circulation models input a constant bottom roughness value (i.e., friction factor) or fixed bed profile that parameterizes the effects of seabed roughness...
